A Weekend at Junipers Reservoir RV Resort
More Than the Stars

The journey into the Oregon Outback offers a plethora of events and outdoor adventures. The beginning of August lights up the dark sky, with the Sturgeon Full Moon. Given its name by the Native Americans of the region, in celebration of the abundance of sturgeon caught during this time of year.  Each phase of the moon throughout the month brings a reason to explore more of Lake County and plan your Perfect Three Day Itinerary that begins at Junipers Reservoir RV Resort.

More Than Stars

Junipers Reservoir RV Resort is Oregon’s Premier Dark Sky Destination for Stargazing, but camping near the reservoir will also  provide you with many opportunities to explore the outdoors. Junipers is a unique and family-friendly RV Resort. In addition to its being a destination for stargazing, it is an all inclusive camping experience that combines the ordinary with the extraordinary. If fishing is first on your list, the reservoir is just a cast of a line away from catching rainbow trout or yellow-bellied catfish. Your day could also be filled with hiking the wildlife trails, exploring the ranch and mountain biking in the Oregon Outback. Cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts, both mountain biking or gravel riders have discovered this area and the impact on tourism has been positive in showcasing this beautiful corner of High Desert, Dark Sky Oregon. The nearby City of Lakeview, is becoming a popular mountain biking area offering a variety of notable mountain biking trails, 37 of which are designated for mountain biking. On your discovery tour of the KV Ranch, go walking or hiking on the trails. Bird watching, rock hounding and the beauty of wildflowers can all be found while hiking the wildlife trails and ranch road. If you decide to take a day to explore the KV Ranch you will catch a glimpse of the wildlife that roams this 5,000 acre working cattle ranch. A few of the residents that you may see are pronghorn antelope, mule deer, eagles, hawks, ground squirrels, rock chucks or coyotes. At the end of the day, relax with a game of volleyball or horse shoes. The choices are many and as always as the night descends, the stars beckon to all, to sit and look up.

Exploring Lakeview, Oregon

A day of exploration in Lakeview and surrounding areas is a must to include on any itinerary. Traveling along the Oregon Outback Scenic Byway, almost 200 miles of high desert landscape, you will arrive in Lakeview, one of its many distinctions being that at an elevation of 4,757 feet, it is the tallest town in Oregon. Located at the epicenter of a burgeoning cultural renaissance, and building on its history, western heritage and the distinction of being the largest Dark Sky Sanctuary in the world. The centerpiece to the downtown is the Alger Theater, a monument to the Art Deco period and establishing itself as the heart of the Lakeview community. During the year and each season the theater hosts many events for the community and visitors. Unique businesses abound in the downtown for the experience of adventure shopping. A walking tour takes you through the historic downtown where the past and future of Lakeview converge to welcome those drawn to discovering this town in Goose Lake Valley at the foot of the Warner Mountains. The Outback Scenic byway passes through Lakeview as it takes you on your way while wandering the region.

Lakeview functions as the hub of the region’s wheel, in the midst of high desert country, with spokes leading in all directions, to the sights to see and be in awe of, within the Lake County. Within an easy distance  are the  Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, Warner Mountains, and Fremont-Winema National Forest. The list of natural wonders to visit in Lake County is almost endless, from Fossil Lake, to Hunter’s Hot Springs to see Oregon’s only geyser, Old Perpetual,  or Devil’s Garden, this high country desert will bring you back again and again.

The Allure of August in Lake County – Dark Sky Sanctuary

Throughout the month of August, the Stargazing will bring the brilliance of the Celestial Events, for you to end your day and begin the evening, pondering the universe and planning your next adventure. Opening the month, was the  Perseid Meteor Shower. One of the most famous meteor showers of the year and at its peak dozens of meteors per hour.

Mid-month the new moon appeared. The darkest skies of the month mean the Milky Way shines at its brightest. As the month progresses, Saturn reaches its closest point to Earth and is visible all night long, brighter than at any other time of year. All month the Pleiades are at its best. Look for the beautiful seven sisters star cluster in the evening sky through August. All can be viewed as you sit out under the stars, listening to the quiet of the night, anticipating the next day at Junipers Reservoir RV Resort and the adventures that await.

August may be the last month of summer but it is the gateway to the fall season and the landscape will change colors, a chill will be in the air, but the peaceful tranquility to be found at Junipers will remain the same. September has arrived in the Premiere Dark Sky Sanctuary. Save the date of September 3rd., for the Lake County Round-Up and Downtown Street Party in Lakeview, Oregon.
